What Is A Gabion?

Gabions (from Italian gabbione meaning “big cage”; from Italian gabbia and Latin cavea meaning “cage”) are cages, cylinders, or boxes filled with soil or sand that are used in civil engineering, road building, and military application. For erosion control caged riprap is used. For dams or foundation construction, cylindrical metal structures are used. In a military context, earth or sand-filled Gabions are used to protect artillery crews.

 Civil engineering: The most common civil engineering use is to stabilize shore against erosion. Other uses include retaining walls, temporary floodwalls, to filter silt from runoff, for small or temporary/permanent dams, river training, channel lining. They may be used to direct the force of a flow of flood water around a vulnerable structure. Gabions are also used as fish barriers on small streams.

 Gabion baskets have some advantages over loose riprap because of their modularity and ability to be stacked in various shapes. They also have advantages over more rigid structures because they can conform to ground movement, dissipate energy from flowing water and drain freely. Their strength and effectiveness may increase with time in some cases, as silt and vegetation fill the interstitial voids and reinforce the structure. They are sometimes used to keep stones which may fall from a cutting or cliff from endangering traffic on a thoroughfare.

 Gabions have also been used in building, as in the Dominus Winery in Napa Valley, California. The exterior is formed by modular wire mesh Gabions containing locally quarried stone; this construction creates an environment of moderate temperatures within the building.

 Military use: In the medieval era, Gabions were round cages with open tops and bottoms, made from wickerwork and filled with earth for use as military fortifications. These early military Gabions were used to protect field artillery gunners. The wickerwork cylinders were light and could be carried relatively conveniently in the ammunition train, particularly if they were made in several diameters to fit one in another. At the site of use in the field, they could be stood on end, staked in position, and filled with soil to form an effective wall around the gun. Today, Gabions are often used to protect forward operating bases.

H.M. King Bhumibol Provides Relief Packages to Flood Victims

H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously provided relief items to flood victims stationed at temporary shelters in Petchaburi and Ratchaburi provinces,welded wire mesh distributor, while related units continue to accommodate flood victims.

Prasong Witoonkitja, who is the Secretary-General of the Rachaprasong Nukhro Foundation Under The Royal Patronage,buy fiberglass mesh, was asked by H.M. the King to provide relief items to flood victims being housed at temporary shelters at Ratchapat Petchaburi University and Din Daeng’s Volunteers Territorial Administration Office.

There are currently 491 flood evacuees from 175 households at Ratchapat Petchaburi and 57 evacuees from 18 households at Din-Dang’s Volunteers Territorial Administration Office.

Prasong also traveled to provide relief packages to flood victims in other shelters, such as the Nong Po temple in Ratchaburi Province, the Luang Ban Rai Camp,防洪墙-镀锌钢格板,diamond wire mesh, Bang Lee Jaroentum Temple, and the Pra Sangkatikan Institution.

The flood victims were touched by His Majestys gracious generosity.

Meanwhile, at the Muang district in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Ratchathani Asok villagers and Ubon Ratchathani residents have gathered to fill 40,000 bottles with drinking water, which they will distribute to flood victims in Bangkok.

With the flood crisis continuing. Subhasakdi Krishnamra, the chairman of Deloitte Southeast Asia, recommends this simple checklist for business leaders to follow in recovering their operations:

- Perform a situation analysis including a full business-impact assessment.

- Study options and strategies for reassessing markets and financial positions.

- Communicate with relevant parties _ authorities, customers, employees and insurers _ regarding the repair and rebuilding of premises, operations, IT systems and equipment, followed by returning the employees to work.

- Update crisis-management plans.

Recently, I spoke with three executives about how they view and have responded to the crisis.

Moving forward with improvements

Staff are the first group to receive our support. We also help our direct contacts such as royal goldsmith instructors in the Salaya area of Nakhon Pathom and their families. Then there are donations to the general public as well.

“With so many small factories forced to close, the crisis has turned into an opportunity for us. Our customers have become even more confident in us since it is clear we can produce amid a difficult situation. The ability to switch production from one factory to another quickly is crucial. If necessary, we can move 500 employees from our Bang Na site to our Nakhon Ratchasima location in only 12 hours.”

Playing it by ear
